CPExpert Product Update 99-2 |
|---|
This product update forwards updates to both software and documentation. The software update is Release 9.2.0 of CPExpert. The release number indicates that it is the second release of 1999.
This release (1) provides support for OS/390 Version 2 Release 8 (V2R8), (2) provides enhanced data selection/reporting options and additional analysis for the CICS Component, (3) provides enhanced data selection/reporting for the WLM Component, (4) provides enhanced data selection/reporting for the MVS Component, (5) provides updated documentation on CD-ROM, and (6) corrects errors that have been reported.
Additionally, this product update announces the availability of the DB2 Component of CPExpert.
Technical Note: IBM's CICS Performance Guide for CICS/Transaction Server for OS/390 Release 1.3 has been considerably enhanced with recommended analysis and suggested changes for CICS/TS Release 1.3. Many of these enhancements are applicable to all releases of CICS/TS, and some of the enhancements are applicable to CICS/ESA Release 4.1. The above improvements to CPExpert reflect these enhancements to IBM's CICS Performance Guide.
Technical Note: Some CPExpert users have implemented the WLM-managed initiators option available with Goal Mode. CPExpert does not yet analyze performance implications of the WLM-managed initiators because it is difficult to distinguish jobs that are JES-managed from those that are WLM-managed. Only SMF Type 26 records currently contain any distinguishing information. Few sites collect SMF Type 26 records and the SMF Type 26 records might not even be available during a day's SMF data (these are Job Purge records and jobs often extend beyond a single day).
I have asked IBM to place an indicator in the SMF Type 30 (Interval) records so that CPExpert can distinguish between JES-managed and WLM-managed initiators. I believe that the SMF30WMI variable will be available in SMF Type 30 records beginning with OS/390 Version 2 Release 9. If the promised SMF30WMI variable does appear in this release of OS/390, CPExpert will be enhanced to include analysis of performance problems related to WLM-managed initiators in CPExpert Release 10.1, to be issued in April 2000.
. This release provides all
updated
documentation to reflect references for OS/390 Version 2 Release 8. The
CPExpert documentation is accessible via Adobe Acrobat Reader, and the CD-ROM
contains a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Adobe Acrobat Reader should
be installed on your PC under Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows for
Workgroups, or Windows NT(1). Installation of
the Reader will require about 6 megs
of space on your hard drive.
There is no additional charge for the CD-ROM versions of CPExpert documentation. If any user does not have the capability to access documentation on CD-ROM (or simply prefers to have hard-copy documentation), please give me a call.
I really appreciate calls from users reporting problems or simply asking questions. As I said in the original delivery letter for CPExpert, if errors occur with your installation, please don't waste your time trying to solve the error. Just give me a call and I will quickly fix the problem!
Early this year, Bill Hatcher of the Department of Veterans Affairs (a long-time user of CPExpert) finally motivated me to complete the DB2 Component. Once I started testing the DB2 Component, Bryant Osborn (NationsBank, that later merged with BankofAmerica) kindly provided me with lots of DB2 test data. Thanks Bill. Thanks Bryant.
The bottom line is that the DB2 Component of CPExpert now is ready to analyze performance constraints to DB2 at your shop. I've enclosed a marketing glossy that highlights the analysis done by the DB2 Component.
Installation
I suggest that you use the following steps to install Release 9.2.0:
Create a new PDS titled "prefix.CPEXPERT.V92.SOURCE".
Create a new PDS titled "prefix.CPEXPERT.V92.USOURCE".
Install CPExpert into the "prefix.CPEXPERT.V92.SOURCE" using the normal installation procedures described in the CPExpert Installation Guide.
Copy your old USOURCE members into "prefix.CPEXPERT.V92.USOURCE". This step should be done so you do not have to recreate all of your unique parameters. There are no changes to the variables in USOURCE members, unless you are exercising new options provided with this code.
If you elected to receive updates to CPExpert on diskette, the software is distributed on the CD-ROM that contains the CPExpert user documentation. I have created a BAT file for you so that you can easily upload the new software. This file is titled "UPLOAD.BAT" and will be located in the SOFTWARE directory of the CD-ROM. The BAT file was created per your instructions (i.e., using SEND, etc.).
